M.S. student Sihyeong Park presented “From Perception to Action: 6D Pose Estimation” at an LG AI Research Tech Talk, introducing fundamental concepts and recent research trends in 6D pose estimation.
The talk examined key challenges in real-world 6D pose estimation, such as occlusion, symmetry, textureless objects, and cluttered environments/domain gap. It also reviewed the development of the field, from conventional geometry-based methods to instance-level and category-level approaches, as well as recent methods including NOCS and Any6D.
In addition, the seminar highlighted how recent studies are moving beyond approaches that rely heavily on object-specific or category-specific priors, toward more generalizable model-free pose estimation. The discussion also noted that future progress will depend not only on improved accuracy, but also on the close integration of shape understanding, alignment, and action-oriented reasoning.
